Details about Coffey Strong’s new features

Included in this new forum functionality are user profiles, groups, activity streams, notifications, forums, and more.

Here is a brief overview explaining some of the new features. This may get a little technical, so we recommend just logging in and take a look around. We’re always here to support you if you encounter any issues.

A forum is an online discussion feature where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages. They differ from chat rooms in that messages are generally longer than one line of text and are archived for later access.

Forums have a specific set of jargon associated with them; example: a single conversation is called a “thread”, or topic.

A discussion forum is hierarchical (or tree-like) in structure: a forum can contain a number of subforums, each of which may have several topics. Within a forum’s topic, each new discussion started is called a thread, and can be replied to by as many people as so wish.

On the Coffey Strong website, users have to register and then subsequently log in, in order to post messages.

Coffey Strong will now include the ability for a member to maintain their own user profiles including their Coffey Park address and insurance provider.

Activity Stream

Provides a view of everything happening recently. Similar to the Facebook activity stream or home screen.

You can add other members as friends so that you can see their activity in your Activity Stream.

A feature allowing members to self-organize based on similar interests (i.e. neighborhood, street, common floorplan, etc.).

How Groups Work
Users will be able to create groups. Groups can be set to be public, which allows anyone to join the group. Public groups will also be visible sitewide and their activity will be displayed in the Activity feed.

Private groups require users to request membership and they will be visible sitewide. The activity of a private group, though, is only visible to group members.

Finally, hidden groups are invite-only, aren’t visible on the rest of the website, and the group activity is visible only to group members.

Each group, regardless of the group type can be set to allow new invites in one of three ways:

  • Only group admins
  • Group admins and moderator (Coffey Strong volunteers)
  • Any member of the group
  • Like members, each group can have an avatar and a header image which makes it more recognizable.
